Everton submits bid to sign Spain int’l who missed training on Weds as he heads for club exit
Everton want to sign Athletic centre-back Unai Nunez as he misses training on Wednesday
Everton are in the hunt to sign Athletic Bilbao centre-back Unai Nunez this summer but face competition from Celta Vigo, according to La Voz de Galicia.
The Spanish newspaper reported via their print edition on Thursday (14 July, page 41) that Nunez, 25, missed training with Athletic on Wednesday (13 July), which suggests that he could be on his way out of the Bilbao club.
It is understood that Celta looked as though they were signing the one-time Spain international last week before the deal was put on hold.
However, La Voz de Galicia now claims that the hold-up was due to Athletic awaiting the results of medical tests for their centre-back Year Alvarez, who is a two-time cancer survivor.
As for Everton, the newspaper claims they are trying to lure Nunez to Goodison Park this summer with the centre-back hearing “siren songs” from the Premier League.
But it seems as though Celta Vigo are edging towards a deal for the Spaniard.
Bottom of the barrel
Everton haven’t done much this summer and understandably, fans are growing agitated.
It’s no surprise though, in all honesty, with Financial Fair Play rules crippling what Frank Lampard is able to do in the transfer market even though Richarlison was sold to Tottenham for up to £60million.
Farhad Moshiri has run the club into the ground and we’re now at the point where it’s mid-July and this almost-relegated squad of players has only seen one new addition in the form of James Tarkowski.
We’ve seen a lot of players leave Goodison already.
As well as Richarlison, the Blues have also waved goodbye to Jonjoe Kenny, Fabian Delph, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Cenk Tosun, which should have lowered the wage bill quite significantly.
However, we’re still yet to see anyone brought in other than Tarkowski.
Nunez barely played for Athletic last season.
He made just nine La Liga appearances for the Bilbao club and completed 90 minutes on just six occasions from seven starts.
It’s fair to say that despite him being a Spain international, Everton are scrapping the barrel here.
